  About Roger

Roger Pyke has been painting since childhood.  Brought up on a dairy farm near Launceston, he spent several years capturing the essence of landscapes, buildings and people, using paper, canvas or board, gradually expanding his creative talent.  This took him throughout England, Wales and Scotland, observing the diversity of nature, weather and architecture that would eventually inspire him to become an accomplished artist in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolour.

Roger's career led him into the world of transport, where he experienced long distance lorry driving and ran his own haulage business for seven years, before moving into the management area of the distribution industry.  Four years ago he decided to return to the less stressful life of driving, which has given him more time to devote to his art.

In the last five years, his paintings have evolved with tremendous clarity.  Roger, inspired by a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and subsequent journeys through Vermont and New Hampshire, began developing a creative use of watercolour.  Applying layers of paint flicked over several base coats, he discovered that a three-dimensional effect could be achieved, one that responded to light and gave an astonishing depth usually reserved for oil paintings.  His technique has now progressed to other subjects including the stunning watercolour, 'Henge', a series of paintings on Launceston Castle and South Petherwin Church, plus a collection of oils and watercolours based on Aston Martin and other exclusive sports cars.  With his transport background, Roger has also produced commissioned studies of vintage lorries and vans.

He has previously sold work in the Waterbridge Gallery, Bacup near Manchester and exhibited a number of paintings in the Launceston area.  Most of his recent art has been undertaken on a commission basis.

Roger has endeavoured to develop a style of painting that gives both texture and atmosphere, whilst also reflecting the effects of natural light.  He feels that a painting should look like a painting and with this in mind, gives slight imbalance to the perspectives.  He is greatly influenced by The Impressionists, Turner, Edward Hopper and Cornish artist Kurt Jackson.

He still lives in the Launceston area, sharing a studio cottage in South Petherwin with his wife, Cherry and one cat.
